A 25-year-old man died at a hospital following a shooting in front of a Westchester sports bar, police announced.
The incident happened on Sunday, Sept. 8 around 4 a.m., when two men started fighting in front of the Go Sports Bar & Lounge Restaurant in Yonkers at 289 South Broadway, according to Yonkers Police Sgt. Robert Spink.
During the altercation, one man took out a gun and hit the other person with it. The man then fired one shot at the victim, hitting him in the chest, Spink said.
After being shot, the victim walked out into the street and was met by two responding Yonkers Police officers who began giving him medical help.
The victim, identified as 25-year-old Yonkers resident Celestino Vasquez-Patricio, was later taken to a nearby trauma center, where he died of his injury.
Following the shooting, other officers apprehended a suspect, 31-year-old Carlos Villanueva of Yonkers, on nearby Ludlow Street, where he had been fleeing the scene of the incident. While he was running away, Villanueva allegedly threw his gun in a nearby front yard, where it was recovered by police, according to Spink.
After his arrest, Villanueva was charged with:
- Second-degree murder;
- Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
The case is now being prosecuted by the Westchester County District Attorney's Office.
Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza gave a statement condemning the shooting:
"No matter the intensity of a dispute, escalating it by introducing a weapon and resorting to violence is never justified. Thanks to the swift actions of our officers and detectives, we were able to quickly apprehend this violent individual," Sapienza said, adding, "He will now have to face the justice system and be held accountable for his actions in court."
